Why disagreement at times in no way diminishes my admiration for my favorite Supreme Court Justice, the Notorious RBG.

Hearing the news of the death of the person who has become a cultural Icon of sorts was like the turd on top of what has become the shit-Sundae of a pretty awful year. From cancelled milestone events, to fur-babies and extended family illness….. #2020youretheworst.

I watched the Ruth Bader Ginsberg documentary. This feisty, opinionated, spirited, strong Supreme Court justice was beyond inspirational. While her health status has been in question for years, it was still shocking and tragic to learn of her passing. In our house, she occupied the same status that Betty White and the Queen of England…..they can NEVER die! And yet, we know that for all of us, there is a time, there is a season, there is an inevitability. Sadly, RBG’s day has come. Knowing what is on the line for our country, certainly she fought as valiantly in the end as she had her entire life!

The documentary endeared her to many, self included, illuminating the strength of the human spirit and the truth that individuals are capable of hard things, and creating change in our world. Every single one of us is capable of this same experience, and yet it is a small few who make the sacrifices, who put in the work, who work tirelessly to see the change in the world they want to live. RBG was one of those people.

While I didn’t agree with every stance she had on every issue, in a very real way I am aware that is the magic of what she (and the other Justices) have to do in their professional positions.

While I have never been faced with an unplanned pregnancy, I know others who have.

While I have never had the desire to be part of the military, I know others (family included) who have.

While I am not part of the LGBT-Q community, I have family member and friends who are.

I want to live in a world where we SUPPORT & HONOR the dignity and rights of those who are marginalized, disenfranchised and discriminated against. It matters little if I feel the decisions the court makes are “right for me,” rather supporting our collective. I can say I support this and don’t support that….but that is hardly the point. RBG & the other Supreme Court Justices have the challenge in looking at the cases that come before them, and making an ethical/legal decision for our entire country of over 350.000,000 million people of all races/genders/religions/sexual orientations/economic statuses and otherwise. I am not important. I am 1/350,000,000. I am insignificant. Our county and the belief that we ALL matter together as a whole, is.

I am so thankful for her tenacity in not accepting the status quo, but rather pushing the concept of what is possible for everyone who has been told his/her dreams are out of reach. May ALL of us challenge ourselves to be like RBG, not fragile like a flower, rather fragile like a BOMB!

RIP. RBG, you will be missed.
